Music at  ST MARY'S   Perivale

Thursday 9 July 2 pm

Henry Tozer (jazz piano)

Henry Tozer returns to St Mary's Perivale to share his unique take on the old jazz standards (the repertoire of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and so forth) along with his own original songs. In this bespoke performance, he will weave in piano improvisations throughout the programme, creating an evolving tapestry of music woven through a sustained musical thread. Echoes of Chopin and 19th Century Romanticism will dance within this musical meditation on love, loss and life, partly drawn from the passing of his father last winter.

Henry Tozer is a London-based British composer, pianist and singer-songwriter. Originally from the Devon countryside, he studied music at Cambridge and moved to New York with his music featuring in soundtracks for ‘Demolition‘ (starring Jake Gyllenhaal) and ‘My Blind Brother‘ (starring Adam Scott). His music was played in the BBC Proms as part of the BBC Young Composer of the Year. Since 2016 he has lived and worked principally in London performing with various musicians as well as in many solo shows in local venues including the Polish Hearth Club, Burgh House, Hampstead Jazz Club and St Mary's Perivale. In 2023 he created and toured the highly-acclaimed sold-out show “The Music of Leonard Cohen”, and began singing with the Idrisi Ensemble, performing rare and unrecorded medieval music (dating back as far as the 4th Century) in sold-out concerts in across the UK and Europe.

Henry directed the Ealing Gospel Choir for many years, and was Head of Vocals at the Twyford Trust. He gives workshops and private tuition, for music and also meditation and holistic health.  He believes in the transcendent power of music, where subtleties of technique are integrated with deep presence and honesty of delivery. For Henry, there has always been a living relationship between performing and composing, manifesting most obviously within his piano improvisations, deeply influenced and inspired by the Romantic composers – Chopin, Wagner, Franck, Rachmaninoff and Strauss. With reverence for the multitudinal colours of extended harmony and voice-leading, along with great affection for the popular music of the 30s, 40s and 50s which birthed the “jazz standard”, he brings a unique dimension to his interpretations as well as his own songs, which synergise all these influences, including those of 60s and 70s British folk and singer-songwriters.

Henry is currently focused on recording his original music – he has converted his flat into a recording studio and sleeps underneath his grand piano. He is working towards the release of piano pieces, jazz standards and his own songs.
