Trio Sonorité was founded in 2017 by Özlem Tercanli - clarinet, Daryl Giuliano - cello, and Jelena Makarova - piano. All three musicians have international careers and are Royal Academy of Music alumnae. The Trio has performed in concert halls across the UK and Europe establishing itself as one of the most exciting chamber music ensembles. They have been featured on Women's Radio Station, as part of Classic Women Future Awards, and Radio Turquoise. Alongside traditional music, the Trio explores 20th and 21st century repertoire. Projects have included world-premieres, cross-arts collaborations, and performing works by female composers, historically underrepresented.
In 2023, Trio Sonorité were artist-in-residence with Illuminate Women's Music . The performances received a glowing review from Paul Conway in Musical Opinion . The series was a collaboration with Angela Slater, Sylvia Lim, Kristina Arakelyan, and Vinthya Perinpanatan, who wrote works for Trio Sonorité, in conjunction with the performance of works by Stephanie Ann Boyd, Errollyn Wallen, Diana Cemeryte, and Louise Farrenc.
During 2020 lockdown, Trio Sonorité took part in a multimedia project funded by Help Musicians Scotland and Lithuanian Council for Culture. This involved socially-distanced online rehearsals and a livestream recital, and included Ruta Vitkauskaite's work “Edge of Time" with art projections by Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour member Aimee Birnbaum.
Following the success of this collaboration, Trio Sonorité, Ruta, and Aimee formed Chromatikon, art and music synthesis collective. They performed the audio-visual work “Bright” at the Mall Galleries in London followed by an album recording, collaboration with Lithuanian National Radio and Television, of “The Music Shell” which they showcased across Lithuania as part of the Kaunas 2022 - European Capital of Culture festival. The group also performed “The Music Shell” in November at JW3 for International Litvak Days celebration organised by the Lithuanian Embassy in London. The Trio recorded “Aurora Dances” for composer Anthony Esland's album, released last year.
