Restoration in 1965The restoration undertaken in 1965, precipitated by the urgent structural threat to the chancel, was used to simplify and modernize the church, under the supervision of Lawrence King. The Victorian pews were replaced by modern chairs, and the Victorian tiles were removed, and a new stone floor laid down. A new hanging Rood and a stone altar, dedicated to Rev Hope, (Rector from 1926 to 1949) were installed. The iron screen between the nave and the chancel was replaced by wooden rails. The chancel ceiling was beautifully re-gilded, and a modern stained glass window, depicting the nativity, installed at the East end. Restoration was complete by 1965, but the church was closed for regular worship only 7 years later, in 1972.
